  Redirect Virus: Mystery to Solve

16-Feb-12      :      Computer Service

Nightmare for my client; but it held a morbid fascination for this Geek. A new virus. Cleaned beautifully, only to get the call: "I still have the same problem."

Every time the client wanted to surf the net, whatever page, the status bar reported waiting to be redirected to some other page. Nightmare. Especially if you do your e-mail online. He did. Nothing could be done.
I took away his notebook as I could see the computer needed a clean up. NOTE: Only one antivirus and one anti-spyware program should be installed on your computer.
In the workshop, we uninstalled all the crap and installed our favourite anti-virus/anti-spyware programs and ran them to disinfect the computer. We cleaned out the hosts file and tidied up the Windows Registry. We defragmented the drives and tested the internet. Hard wired and Wireless. All was good.
We returned the notebook with confidence. All is well. I fired up the computer and surfing was easy. A passing traveller did his e-mail online. {Later realised we were online through neighbour's wireless router}
My heart sunk when we got the call: "I still have the same problem."
What?? Where had the virus been hiding? Must be from a webpage that the client's revisiited.
I went. I saw. Same problem again. Redirect to some page that couldn't be found.
It was the router. Had to be. Only happened when using this router. Sure enough, the router had been hacked.
CHANGE your ROUTER's default admin PASSWORD. Is the best way to stop this happening.

  Why no Electric? Kamoy !!

29-Aug-11      :      Electrical Installation

Recently we re-installed Electrics for a house that we had re-wired before. Not because we did a bad job the first time, but because the cable had been stolen.

Mostly it was taken from the attic. This was where we had rewired. Previously none of the cable was in conduit. Luckily they didn't take it all. I like to think that our client was spared total clean out because we had done such a good job of hiding the cable in conduit and connection boxes. A neighbour's house, that still had the exposed spaghetti solution, had been completely stripped.
Just the Heavy Duty stuff, most valuable per metre, went. The mains into the house, The 6mm for air-con/kitchen appliances and some of the 2.5mm for sockets had vanished.
We knew the electrics well in that house and were happy to do the job of balancing the phases and making the Electric Safe again. The thieves had also taken some telephone and TV aerial cable which we hadn't noticed on our initial assessment. All is up and running again now.

  Floods cause more Cloud

15-Dec-11      :      Websites

Our Bangkok Clients couldn't get to work due to flooding. No access to their Network, but the Website has some Client data - maybe it should have more. Cloud computing makes sense!

They are members of a team that all need access to the same master files in order to share work and manage their clients and see up to date supplier information .
We built them a website with both Client Login and Admin Login right from the beginning.
Clients can see their special prices for the myriad of options that they can choose from.
Admin can login to change descriptions, pictures, dates of availability, special offers, costs and prices of their products. They can also keep information on their clients and their suppliers all hidden from the outside world. All useful stuff for a company.

  New Website Unleashed

27-Oct-11      :      Websites

Ban Dee Digital finally updates its own Website. While making and upgrading clever CMS websites for our clients, the ancient Ban Dee site was static. Now we're rewriting the content and the Content Management System (CMS).

As in many service industries, the techies never get around to fixing up their own house. The mechanic's car is a wreck. The painter and decorators house is a tip; and the programmer's website is flat, unchanged and irrelevant.

We hope to change this so that visitors can quickly see what we do and if we can help them with something.

Our clients can log in to see what information we have for them.
